Tasmanian doctor Bastian Seidel has confirmed he will be contesting the seat of Huon for the Labor party in the upcoming Legislative Council election.

Dr Seidel said he was delighted to be Labor’s candidate for Huon.

“I’ve been living here for well over a decade and been the local GP for 10 years. I know the needs of our community,” Dr Seidel said.

“What I am hearing from my local community is people are concerned they are being taken for granted.

“We need a stronger advocate for the good people here in the Huon Valley [and] I pledge to be that strong advocate.”

Dr Seidel said the biggest challenges facing Huon were the lack of services.

“Our ambulance service is run on goodwill and basically by volunteers. Our firefighters are stretched on a good day,” he said.

Dr Seidel said he wants to see education and well-paying jobs available in the Huon for his two young sons.

“They deserve to have a great future here in the valley,” he said.

“I don’t want them to leave when they grow up. We need to make sure our children have a future they deserve.”

Labor leader Rebecca White said Mr Seidel was absolutely committed to his community.

“[And] to making sure this community has a better and fair representative, advocating for them every single day in the Tasmanian Parliament,” Ms White said.

The legislative council elections for the seats of Huon and Rosevears will take place on Saturday, May 2.
